BARRIO GOLD RECORDS & TRASMUNDO present TOKYO/CALIFAS EXPRESS

カリフォルニア（チカーノ用語でCALIFAS）と東京を結ぶカルチュラル・イヴェント。レギュラー化しての第一弾はユニークな才能をもつふたりのクリエイターが登場。日本でもデビュー・アルバムから熱烈なフォロワーを生んでいるオルタナ・シンガーソングライターの鬼才、マリネロ。そしてカリフォルニア中部で多くの移民を集めてきた町、フレズノで活躍するチカーノ詩人のフアン・ルイス・グスマン。マリネロはプロモーション演奏としてアコースティック・パフォーマンスを披露。フアンはバリオ・ゴールド・レコードが選んだ重要チカーノ・チューン10曲に対してスポークン・ワーズを創作発表する。日本語訳も準備予定。

DJにはマリネロを大プッシュしてきたトラスムンドからトラスムンドDJs、そしてチカーノ・カルチャーを長年追っかけてきた関東ラテン・ソウル連合が、またフードは晴れ豆キッチンのシェフでもありメキシコ・モレーロスのレストランでも働いた経験をもつHolyが担当。東京とカリフォルニアのチカーノ・サイドを結ぶ貴重イベント。

This cultural event connects California (called CALIFAS in Chicano lingo) and Tokyo. The first installment of this regular program features two uniquely talented creators: Marinero, a gifted alternative singer-songwriter who has garnered a passionate following in Japan since his debut album; and Juan Luis Guzman, a Chicano poet active in Fresno, a city in central California that has attracted many immigrants. Marinero will perform an acoustic performance as a promotional piece, while Juan Luis will compose and present spoken word pieces for 10 essential Chicano tunes selected by Barrio Gold Records. Japanese translations will also be prepared.

The DJs will be from Trasmundo, a store that has been supporting Marinero, as well as the Kanto Latin Soul Union, a group that has long been a fan of Chicano culture. Food will be provided by Holy, a chef at Haremame Kitchen who has also worked at a restaurant in Morelos, Mexico. Join us for this rare and unique cross cultural exchange!

◎マリネロ

マリネロ（シンガーソングライター）は、ラテンの影響を受けたベッドルーム・インディーバンドとして始動、その後ブロードキャスト、キャロル・キング、ロス・パステレス・ベルデス、エンニオ・モリコーネといった幅広いアーティストに敬意を表すサウンドで、より音楽的に成長を遂げる。2018年の『HIGH TONE』のようなノイズジーなアプローチの初期作品を経て、プロジェクトはより私的で落ち着いた方向へ進化（2019年『TRÓPICO DE CÁNCER』）。2021年の『HELLA LOVE』は60年代後半のビーチ・ボーイズのアルバムを彷彿とさせる芸術的にアレンジに柔らかなラテンサウンドがふんだんに織り込まれ、2025年の『LA LA LA』では、さらに豊かで洗練された方向へと変化を遂げている。

Marinero began life as a woozy bedroom indi band with Latin influences, and has since grown into something much more musically involved with a sound that paid homage to influences as wide as Broadcast, Carole King, Los Pasteles Verdes, and Ennio Morricone. After initial releases that had a noisier approach like 2018’s High Tone, the project became more intimate and subdued (2019’s TRÓPICO DE CÁNCER), and 2021’s Hella Love was as artfully arranged as a late ‘60s Beach Boys album, only with plenty of soft Latin sounds mixed in. The balance tipped even further in the direction of the later on 2025’s lushly produced La La La.

◎フアン・ルイス・グスマン

メキシコ・ハリスコ州ハマイにルーツを持つ移民の息子としてカリフォルニア州セルマで育つ。詩人、教員、文学・舞台芸術ディレクターとして活動するグスマンの作品は『ザ・ランパス』『ザ・ジョージア・レビュー』『ウィザチェ』などに掲載され、カントムンド、マコンド・ライターズ・ワークショップ、カリフォルニア芸術評議会からフェローシップを授与されている。現在はカリフォルニア州フレズノのフレズノ・シティ・カレッジで英語、チカーノ文学、詩を教えている。

Juan Luis Guzmán is the son of Mexican immigrants raised in Selma, CA with roots in Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico. A poet, professor, literary and performing arts director, Guzmán’s work has appeared in such publications as The Rumpus, The Georgia Review, and Huizache, and has been awarded fellowships from CantoMundo, the Macondo Writers Workshop, and the California Arts Council. Guzmán teaches English, Chicano Literature, and Poetry at Fresno City College, in Fresno, CA.
